Ras Stone is a multi talented vocalist, percussionist, a radio host, and a software tester who is originally from Nima-Accra Ghana, West Africa, and is now based in Wellington, New Zealand. He is known for his conscious lyrics and unique singjay roots style on various genres of music, ranging from reggae to dancehall, dubstep to electronica.
The calling to music came to Ras at an early age, growing up in the ghettos of Nima in Ghan. Music was everywhere from dawn till dusk especially reggae. As a child Ras first began to experiment with rhythm and sound by playing on pots and pans with his friends after school. Not having the resources to enable him to pursue his music further, he later abandoned his musical aspirations and carried on with his education and sports.
But with music still on his mind, Ras continued to experiment during college with pursuits such as dance, while at the same time honing his percussion skills on the classroom desks. During this time Ras also developed a secret interest in poetry after hearing Muta Baruka at a friend’s house.
He says, “Many a time I have tried to run away from music but I always get drawn to it. I can’t help it, I just do music because I love it”.
Ras’ life took a turn in a completely different direction when he moved across the world to New Zealand. Gaining inspiration from his new surroundings and experiences, he began writing poems. After meeting longstanding NZ producer, The Nomad, in 2009, he started turning his poetry into songs that would later feature on The Nomad’s ‘Quintessence’ album. Ras has also featured on Rhombus’ ‘Future Reference’ album.
In 2010 Ras teamed up with fellow Audio Mechanics member, Range, to release the ‘Stonerange Fly Away EP’ which is now available on iTunes. He has also collaborated and performed with many leading New Zealand artists including Dub Terminator, DJ Grassroots, Sam Manzanza’s Rhythm band, Vital Sounds, The Audio Mechanics, Newtown Sound, Newtown Rocksteady, Roots Foundation, Lion Rockers Hi Fi and his percussion group Sankofa International Percussion.
Ras has performed at various festivals including Island Vibes in Australia, Rhythm and Vines, Rhythm and Alps and One Love Festivals in New Zealand. He has also performed twice with international heavyweight sound system Mungo’s Hifi.
Ras Stone continues to go from strength to strength. His latest project with Dub Terminator was born in 2011. The duo stayed steadily in the Top 100 on Beatport for some time with their second single ‘Bad Mind’. With almost 11 tracks now at their disposal, they are releasing their first album on 7 March 2014.
